User Study: Does Uncertainty Visualization Matter?
The suitability of different visual encodings of uncertaint data aspects was studied in multiple works, as well as the benefits of providing explicit uncertainty visualization. However, it is not clear if study participants actually read probability values from these visualizations or just use heuristics which represent simple approximations of the real solution. While sufficient for simple probability density distributions, there might be more complex cases where those heuristics fail and lead to wrong answers.
Design and conduction of a user study to evaluate if different visual uncertainty encodings are successful in communicating complex probability distributions.
