Cause and effect relationships

Problem:

How to design visualizations to support the identification of cause and effect relationships in the data? It is still an open challenge, how to visually represent and how to enable the exploration of possible causes of specific condition. This is a complex problem, considering that a condition may not be triggered by a single event but rather by a combination of multiple parameters or even the absence of parameters.

Aim:

You should provide a systematic overview of existing guidelines and approaches in scientific literature that deal with this topic. This topics may be extended for a project, bachelor or master thesis by designing, implementing, and evaluating an interactive research prototype or conducting a user study.
