Visualization for non-experts

Problem

How to design effective visualizations for non-expert users? Assuming that end-users are neither experts in visualization nor are they experts in data analysis, visual representations and interaction mechanisms need to be carefully designed and easily understandable. Which aspects are important in this respect? What to avoid? What approaches exist?

Aim

You should provide a systematic overview of existing guidelines and approaches in scientific literature that deal with this topic. This topics may be extended for a project or bachelor thesis by designing, implementing, and evaluating an interactive research prototype or conducting a user study.
